HOUSING AUTHORITY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY Housing costs in Washington County have increased more quickly than incomes, leaving an ever-growing gap between actual housing costs and the amount that county residents can afford to pay. The Housing Authority of Washington County (HAWC) is dedicated to helping seniors, families, and military veterans bridge that gap by providing access to housing that is safe, affordable, and well-maintained. For assistance within the city limits, please contact the Hagerstown Housing Authority (www.hagerstownha.org). HAWC is a public, nonprofit corporation established by an act of the Board of County Commissioners of Washington County, Maryland. Our programs are partially funded by the federal, state and county government, but are also dependent on rental fees, grants, and other funding sources. Our housing solutions include both rental assistance and homeownership programs. Many of our clients qualify for assistance from the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program offered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), but people who do not qualify for a Housing Choice Voucher may be eligible for other types of assistance. HAWC owns or manages over 300 rental units, including six senior communities. We take great pride in the quality, cleanliness, and safety of these properties and communities. We promote homeownership for first-time home buyers through the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) and Housing Choice Voucher homeownership programs. Participants in these programs receive financial counseling, hands-on home maintenance training, and guidance on finding and purchasing a home. Meet Our Board of Commissioners Our Staff Many of our dedicated and knowledgeable staff members have been with HAWC for at least a decade.
