Housing Authority of Washington County

Housing costs in Washington County have increased more quickly than incomes, leaving an ever-growing gap between actual housing costs and the amount that county residents can afford to pay. The Housing Authority of Washington County (HAWC) is dedicated to helping seniors, families, and military veterans bridge that gap by providing access to housing that is safe, affordable, and well-maintained. HAWC is a public, nonprofit corporation established by an act of the Board of County Commissioners of Washington County, Maryland. Our programs are partially funded by the federal, state and county government, but are primarily dependent on rental fees.

Our housing solutions include both rental assistance (voucher) and elderly and non-elderly apartments and family homes. Many of our clients qualify for assistance from the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program offered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

HAWC owns or manages over 300 rental units, including six senior communities. We take great pride in the quality, cleanliness, and safety of these properties and communities.

We administer the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program which enables HUD-assisted families to increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies.
